Final count?

10 mountain goats.

19 Marmot (Marmots..?). Is Marmot already plural?

Numerous small rodents.

1... Uh... Raven? It looked exactly like a crow, if a crow was the size of a bald eagle.

0 mosquitos. 80° today, but apparently 30° yesterday. Guess that's hard on bugs?

That’s a lot of high altitude floof.

Marmots can micromanage a little too much for my tastes. This one tried to tell my wife how to do her spreadsheets.

Marmots look like giant squirrels. Or fluffy tailed beavers.

Your m armots look a lot like the groundhogs/woodchucks that we have here in the midwest.

A quick google tells me they’re very closely related.

Those pictures are beautiful and make me very jealous.

I think it’s marmots, and those things are MEAN like beavers...

Amazing scenery; I’m wondering where you went - North C ascades? Olympics? Rainier? Baker?

More like fluffy-tailed dry land versions of beavers, with a similar murderous streak.

In marmot news, they’re fat and hibernate. This means that they are (or were) a handy food source in winter. You can just haul your comatose marmot out o f its hidey hole and boil it without much further ado.

Now I’m curious about these friendly marmots. The ones in Yellowstone are angry little things. Mind you, I haven’t seen them often anywhere, certainly not as many as you saw.

Considering how busy that area is, I’m not surprised that they’re accustomed to people.

Yeah, I have to imagine it's only because they all get fed by tourists

Here in Alberta we have Ravens, Crows, Magpies, and a couple of types of Jays. The Ravens get bigger the farther north you go until they hit the “3 of them can chase a coyote away from a carcass size”. The Crows like to harass other birds. Magpies are like teen hooligans, always messing with things, and the Jays mostly keep to themselves and sometimes yell at each other. I’m a big fan of Corvids in general. They are cool birds.

Marmots are fun to see in the wild. I like seeing / hearing Pika’s up in the mountains too.
